Bachmann Dose it again! with this highqulity dcc ho train set!

Bachmann has always had a name for making products, that were better quality then the competition as well as, bringing products, like high quality locomotives, that were out of the price rage of the masses to the masses! they have also been know for innovation, like their patented track plug that makes wiring the transformer to the track, very easy and very safe! This particular set is no exception to those rules!
This particular set features Bachmanns EZ command DCC system. DCC is a system that allows two trains to operate completely independently from each other on the same track. This is to say, you can have, one train and one running reverse on the same track with out having to worry about blocks or separately powered sections of tracks. Basically! the model trains can now completely duplicate the behavior of the real things!
The EZ command system is a complete self contained unit. there are no other parts to buy! the device features 10 addresses to program locomotives to respond to. Switching between locomotive is easy! just press the button that corresponds to the locomotive you want to control, and you have control of it!
Programing the locomotives is so easy, a child could quite literally do it! just push a few buttons and you are done! If only all things were this easy to understand. You can even easily program two locomotives to run together as a pair! For those of you out there that already have and lament letting go of a none dcc locomotive, Bachmann has you covered! Button 10 can be used to operate such a locomotive. I prefer to hook up one of Bachmann’s more modern power packs, see the instructions for the proper model, to the EZ command system. This frees up button 10 to control another DCC locomotive and lets you control the analog non DCC loco with the power pack, independently of the dcc locomotives!
The set uses Bachmanns standard setting, but now somewhat dated EZ track. While it looks special at first glance, all it really is however, is standard HO track that has been attached to interlocking peaces of plastic. This means those infamous rail joints or connectors, little peaces of mettle that transfer the power from track to track, are retained. the track does its job, in terms of making sure that what ever is in the carpet or on the floor, dose not get into you locomotives motor well. However, the connectors have to be adjusted every once and a while, to maintain good power contact! The track features a simple wire that quite literally plugs into the EZ command system! No worries about shorts caused by crossed wires here!
The freight cars included with this set includes are well built and roll very smoothly! You can actually back them around a curve with out them derailing! Somthing that was impossible with the old plastic wheeled and badly weighted train cars from 20 years ago! As I just mentioned, these new cars are all equipped with mettle wheels. they also have Bachmann’s spring loaded mark 2 couplers. These couplers, unlike Bachmann’s previous attempts, these will easily get around the track with out disconnecting! If you want to disengaged them, and do some switching on the included siding, just install and use Bachman’s uncoupling device.
The 2 locomotives, An EMD FT and EMD GP, resemble some of Bachmann’s offering of long past! But that however, is were the similarity’s end! The locomotives are all wheel drive and, of course, DCC equipped. they run pretty smooth although, there are better locomotives out there,these more then do the job! they are, of
The price of this item may case some parents, that had model trains as kids to faint. But we have to remember, that $100 may have bought you a top of the line set, 20 or 30 years ago, we have seen some inflation since then! We also must consider the quality of this product and what it is capable of and it includes for that price! add in the educational value and the fact that a video game system will cost more if not twice as much and teach you nothing, this set then begins to look like the real bargain it is! It puts a well equipped dcc starter set in your kids or your hands for a fraction of the price!
Buy this set for you kid(s) and spend the money saved on games, on some more track and or accessory’s you have the perfect Christmas gift!

Bachmann digital commander

If you are a “little” train enthusiast this is the product for you. If however you plan on remote dcc switches forget it. This has only ten control slots so if you have two trains and a couple switches you are fine. More than that i suggest going with a bigger “prosumer” type of product like an MRC or something of that nature.

Very good….However, some minor issues…..

Overall, the set is very good and a decent value considering you get two locomotives, some rolling stock, one manual turnout, and a digital command control (DCC) system all in the same package. However, I had a few issues: 1) One of the locomotives would always derail in the same exact spot on the same curved piece track. I checked everything including trying the piece of track in different locations in the oval and everytime the same locomotive would derail. My conclusion was it was a faulty curve piece but it would only happen to one locomotive and not both (and a close-up visual inspection of the piece showed nothing different than all the others!). Strange. 2) The other locomotive that did not derail was much more “noisy” than the other locomotive when powering up and would slightly shake as though some moving part on the inside was clipping something preventing smooth operation like the other locomotive (the one that was derailing). 3) I guess I should have paid more attention to the box advertising the turnout – which is manual – meaning you have to physically reach over and switch it yourself rather than control it with the DCC system. This limited my fun in operating both locomotives at the same time and utilizing the side track at the same time. 4) No sounds or additional bells and whistles comes with the set – which is somewhat expected considering this is a starter set but still….

So, in conclusion, I found the set to be very good but a few minor quality issues dulled my excitement after I originally opened the box. Bachmann is known for their good quality products so this was a little bit of a surprise. By the way, this set was extremely easy to setup and use straight out of the box. It also comes with an instructional DVD to help you in setting up your trains for fun. Ultimately, with a few additional pieces of track (including all good curved pieces) and a few automatic turnouts, the set could be really fun and a good purchase. And Bachmann offers all of the great perks you want when buying a train set (sounds, automatic turnouts, etc.) Sometimes, it would be nice to just get everything working great straight out of the box rather than having to spend a little more to maintain the excitement when you first get the train set.

Yorkies, or Yorkshire Terriers, as they are formally known, are arousing and attention holding dogs. They have great personalities and are very smart. They are indicated in the toy group of dogs because of their little size. According to their breed standard they will have to not exceed seven pounds.

The Yorkie originated in Yorkshire, a territory in northern England. It is believed that Scottish miners coming to England for work brought along assorted little long haired terriers that would go on to form what we recognise today as the Yorkie.

Huddersfield Ben, is the dog that is believed to be the foundation sire of this breed. He was born in 1865 in the region of Yorkshire. Legend has it that he won over 70 prizes at ratting contests, therefore earning him popularity all around the region and making him a highly sought after stud dog.

Yorkshire terriers were not their basi name. Originally their name was Broken-Haired Scotch Terriers. It wasn’t until 1870 that their name was changed.

The Yorkshire Terrier did not arrive to the United States until 1872, and was not recognized until 1885 by the AKC. In fact, this breed is one of the original breeds to be recognized by the AKC. Since their arrival Yorkies have always had widespread popularity in America.

This breed is considered on of the more intellectual dog breeds. In fact one study of dog intelligence rated them 27 out of 132 breeds. Yorkies are very easy to train and pick up commands rather quickly.

Due to their popularity, breeders are always attempting to cross them with other breeds. Some frequent combinings are crosses with the Maltese (Morkie), the Miniature Pinscher (Yorkie Pin), and the Poodle (Yorkie-Poo).

Yorkies have also enjoyed a lot of popularity on TV and in movies. In fact one the initial dog from the Wizard of Oz was a Yorkie, altho it was later played by a Carin Terrier.

Favorite Book about “America’s Favorite Toy Trains”?

The fresh, exuberant expression of the Souters’ writing continues throughout the book as a look at a paragraph from Chapter 7 attests: “Lionel has survived competition, inflation, two world wars, the Great Depression, financial scandal, receivership, rampant nepotism, material shortages, off-shore production experiments, dubious corporate acquisitions, management blunders, marketing blunders, the decline of the railroads, Roy Cohn as CEO, loss of its distribution network, loss of its primary customer base, Sputnik, acquisition by a cereal company, spin-off to a toy company, purchase by a millionaire hobbyist, and the computer chip revolution. Today, the name Lionel still means `electric train’.”

Spicing the book further are enticing glimpses at the competition that Lionel often felt nipping at its heels. Here and there throughout the book, sidebars pop up to give views of Carlisle & Finch, Ives, Hafner, American Flyer, Dorfan, Marx, and today’s competing brands. Each of these peeks at the “other brand” relates that manufacturer’s production to the fortunes of Lionel and helps the reader understand Lionel’s response to the threat.

The book does have some shortcomings. It really could have been proofread more closely. A photo caption describing the introduction of the operating cattle car states that it arrived in 1948 but goes on to say that it was pricey for 1947. If this weren’t confusing enough, the typesetter mistook the year for the price, and the caption actually states that the car “was pricey for $1,947 but sold well.” And we thought that today’s prices were high!

Another gaffe comes when OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is twice misnamed the Occupational Safety Hazard Administration. Sharp-eyed readers will also catch other errors such as an occasional misspelled or repeated word. These are not often frequent or blatant enough to detract greatly from the enjoyment that the book offers, but they do suggest an inferior proofreading effort.

Perhaps some readers will be willing to overlook the affronts upon the language from uncorrected typographical errors; however, they may be less willing to overlook factual errors in the history and description of Lionel’s products. During the discussion of Lionel’s brief post-war venture into HO scale trains, the Souters state that “Lionel came out with a strange three-rail HO gauge track that was anathema to its primary hobbyist market.” The fact is that Lionel never “came out with” any such track during the Post War or any other era. In the late Pre War Period, the company did catalog and sell both two and three-rail track in OO gauge for a brief time. American OO gauge track is wider than HO and is not compatible with it. The book is confusing not only two different track gauges but also two different time periods.

Discussion of Lionel’s fortunes in 1959 includes a description of the No. 3435 Aquarium Car, part of which reads, “Inside, a strip of 35mm clear film with fish painted on it moves past the windows when the activation button is pressed as the car passes over the magnetic track section.” The authors must be terribly impressed with the capabilities of Lionel’s remote control track section with its electromagnet to ascribe to it the capability of activating the car’s vibrating motor! In reality, the car is equipped with an off-on lever to start and stop the motor. With the lever in the “on” position, the motor moves the film strip continuously and with total disregard as to whether or not a remote control section of track is even installed on the layout.

While these examples reveal some of the questionable historical research and knowledge of the authors, they are neither so severe nor so numerous as to sentence the book without parole. There is much that is very good about it: sharp, large photographs of prototypes and their O gauge models; a text that is replete with wonderful turns of phrase that make it a joy to read; an honest willingness to tell all; and the fact that the discussion extends to Lionel’s current ownership. On the other hand, occasional textual errors, some factual discrepancies, and the absence of any citations or bibliographies identifying sources limit the extent to which the reader can trust the material.

Is the Souters’ book worth its cover price? Probably. After all, who can quibble with the accuracy of these observations from the concluding chapter:

“Today’s toy train market is driven by an aging population of nostalgia-loving adults who collect and run joyful remembrances of their youth.

“Where Lionel will find itself in 2001 and the years to come is a guessing game, but whoever is making the decisions, whoever is designing the products and marketing them has one supreme advantage over all the competition. They have the name that has come to symbolize durability, value, and imagination for 100 years. They have the loyalty of fans around the world. They have Lionel–America’s Electric Train.”

That Mustang you always wanted!

I purchased this for my 22 year old son because he is always saying he wants a Mustang. It was a hit as a funny gift to give. I guess it is about 12 inches long, not overly big and it has great detail. We are all having fun with it. Highly recommended!

A Great First Remote Control Toy for a Toddler

My 19-month old son loved this fire truck. It’s a bit advanced for him to figure out exactly how to use the remote – the little fireman on top of the truck spins when you raise the controller straight up and down (vertical)- when the fireman points his hose in the direction you want the truck to move in, you lower the controller to a horizontal position. These steps are a little advanced for my son, but are likely to be better understood by a 2 1/2 – 3 year old. In addition, the little fireman spins too fast for even me to really control which direction he moves. Nonetheless, my son loves turning the fire truck on and off from the remote and while he can’t intentionally control where the fire truck goes, he knows that by manipulating the remote, he’s moving the fire truck in some direction and seems to really enjoy this. Overall, I think this is a great first remote control toy and will plan to buy it as a gift for 2-3-year olds.

Doesn’t work well

we acquired this for use in our preschool/daycare so it has really been put to the test. when first introduced to the group they all gravitated toward it immediately. Hey, kids love firetrucks. Where it really fell down was the remote works very poorly or not at all, despite having fresh batteries all around & following the instructions implicitly. After every daycare parent & ourselves couldn’t make it work we just took the batteries out & use it as a unpowered push toy. As that it is rarely used.

Well, it’s durable

I tested this out on my nephew because my kids were too old or too small. This was a great learning toy for him in trying out a remote. It was very easy for him to use, and in a course of minutes he figured it out. The thing crashed down the slide, flew down the stairs, and rammed the walls. Still running. So, durability is there. No small parts either.

However, it doesmn’t make the siren noises, which disapointed said nephew. It also takes a lot of batteries, 5 AAs. Of all the crazy things, it wouldn’t work on the linoleum or hardwood, but worked fine on the carpet. Very strange. A cute toy for 12-18 months, not much older though.
