Freight Trains Airplanes Everett Gracey

Logline An maltreated teenager leaves home at age 13, he jumps up on a boxcar with dreams of being a cowboy. His romantic delusions of grandeur are speedily dashed when he finds that the life of a 13-year-old hobo is anything but carefree. Synopsis He crisscrosses the western percentage of the U.S. riding freight trains. His adventures take him down a spiraling path of life-altering events. It’s a brutal life, specially for a 13-year-old kid alone. He must learn to fend off sexual predators that are all too happy to befriend a hungry, tired young hitchhiker, as well as the illfamed train cops hired to keep bums off the trains, the “Railway Bulls” who beat him to within a few breaths timid of losing his life. But when it closely seems too late, his spirit dares to reawaken when it seems there just might be a faint glimmer of hope left that could alter his life… An excerption I was sitting on top of a boxcar, someplace in California, fourteen years old at the time. It was getting dark and as the train was tardily going by a town, there were Christmas tree lights and decorations around the eaves and in windows, children were playing. I was sobbing uncontrollably, as I always wanted a happy Christmas Day when I was a child.

Review”I may think of more than a few young humans and adults similar that would gain from Everett’s experience, wisdom and humor.” — Lisa Giacopelli, Publishers Marketing Association

“There will never be sufficient stories of courage and persistence. Everett Gracey has put his unfeigned story of grit and gumption down in black and white so all of us may realize we’re not alone in our need to take risks and persevere. And thanks, Everett, for reminding us that, if we approach life with a sense of humor, it greases the rails.” — Mary Westheimer, President, BookZone.com

Like so some humans with courage, you come from a background that required you to have it if you were to subsist at all. This makes a good story. Running away at thirteen is somewhat ordinary, but staying on your own–now that’s a rarity.

Your book holds the reader’s interest all the way through. Confusion of intent is nowhere to be found in your writing. The world needs tales of persistence and gumption. Also, we need more true-life stories of enduring marriages. Yours has plainly had more quicksand than most, but the seriousness with which you and Dorothy took your vows is like quiet thunder. Others would get enjoyment from hearing it through the pages of your very suitable book. — T. Russell Wingate B.A., history, UCLA, 1968 M.A., history, UCSB, 1970 M.B.A., University of Phoenix, 1989

About the AuthorThe books are in regards to a boy growing up for the duration of the Great Depression. For him it was a very mixing up and a discouraging and hindering time, 1922 through 1939. He stumbled through life not knowing what was coming next, living from day to day. Finally in the middle of the sixth grade at age thirteen, confused and without leadership from schools or guidance from his parents, he dropped out of school to go out into the world to be a cowboy. He traveled around the western share of the United States riding freight trains; looking for any work for a good meal he competed in rodeos, worked on farms and ranches.

He married at age 18 (still married to the same lady after 59 years); worked in canneries, drove trucks. Life was interrupted for the infantry in World WarII. He received the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

He passed the exam to be an insurance agent; he sold cars, entered into real estate sales and at long last became an enterpriser in constructing of two-way radio instrumentation for the mercantile and novice radio market place.

This story says that irrespective of handicaps put on an person early in life, with a lot of determination and hard work a person may get over his early life handicaps.

5A Must Read
By Bonita C. van Bergen
For those of you thinking about purchasing this book, please do. It is both disturbing and uplifting. Once you start reading it you will have trouble putting it down. You will ask yourself, how in the world does this boy overcome being abused by his own mother and told that he was worthless and would never amount to anything? You will be amazed at how this 13 yr. old boy set out to prove her wrong. His mere survival is a miracle in itself. Join him on his journey and see how his obstinate determination to find a happier life unfolds. You will be truly inspired. I know I was.

I wanted people to know that this true story has
been written into a Movie Script and is being researched
by Hollywood producers…….

Dear Everett,
I finally, I got the chance to read your movie script. Without
being told, I knew that this story had to be autobiographical, in
some way. The pain that you felt as a child bled through the
pages and kept me from sleeping for several days. Obviously,
this is powerful stuff. It is an amazing story and I couldn’t
stop turning the pages. You have an amazing story and I hope
that we get a chance to do something together with it. Please
let me know how you want me to proceed.
Best regards,
